Chester Scherer, age 76, well known and respected rural citizen on Route 2, Olney, passed away last night at the Red Hills Nursing Home in Sumner, following a long period of ill health.

A lifelong resident of the county, Mr. Scherer was born, the son of Daniel Scherer and Eve Amanda Goss Scherer.

He was united in marriage to Violet Monts on June 24, 1917.

Mr. Scherer and his wife were engaged in farming most of their lifetime. He was a veteran of World War I and a 54 year member of Richland Post No. 30 of the American Legion, a member of World War I vets in Lawrence County.

Mr. Scherer was an active citizen in his community and was serving as a member of the East Richland School Board at the time the new high school building was built. He had served as Democratic Precinct committeeman of Preston township for many years. Mr. Scherer was also an active and faithful member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney.

He leaves his wife, Violet and two children, Russell Scherer of Lawrenceville and Mrs. Vera Louise Shaw of Route 2, Olney. There are 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. Flossie Sager of Olney, Mrs. Ruby Walters of Bridgeport, Roscoe Scherer, Elza Scherer and Virgil Scherer, all of Clremont.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in the Memorial Chapel of the Summers-Marshall Funeral Home with the Rev. John E. Kauffman officiating. Interment will be in Haven Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Tuesday.
