Esther Mae Van Hook, 97, of Bloomington, Indiana, died at the Brown County Health and Living Center on Wednesday, November 17, 2004.
Born July 23, 1907, in Muncie, Indiana, to Frank and Addie Jefferson, she was married to Clyde Van Hook. She attended Ball State Teachers College and was a passionate leader in the Indiana Parent Teacher Association. She served as a State officer and was president of both the Elm Heights Elementary School and the Bloomington High School PTA. She and her husband were grocers in Bloomington and Odon as well as caterers, operating the dining facilities of many of Indiana University's fraternities and sororities. Esther established the hot lunch program at Elm Heights Elementary School.
Esther was a loving and caring mother having three children, James R. Van Hook, Ronald Gene Van Hook, and Jayma Sue Kurz. Jim and his wife, Clara, presently reside in Wilmington, North Carolina. Ron and his wife, Mary Jane, live in Bloomington, Indiana. Esther has seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was a member of North Side Christian Church. During her life she was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Delta Theta Tau, and served as an advisor to the Job's Daughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Joe Jefferson; her husband and her daughter.
Services will be held Saturday, November 20, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at Day Mortuary with burial at Clear Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and an hour before services on Saturday.
