AVERY ARMSTRONG

Avery Armstrong, eldest child of Perry and Elizabeth Harper Armstrong, was born on a farm near Atlanta, Macon county, Missouri, March 24, 1881, and departed this life at his home in Chariton, Iowa, June 8, 1947.

He grew to manhood on the old Armstrong homestead and engaged in farming with his father until 1920.

In the spring of 1922 he came to Chariton as one of the founders of the Chariton Wholesale Grocery, and continued in business until November, 1945.

On June 22, 1924, he was married to Dora Marie Powers, of Chariton, and to this union five children were born, all of whom are living. They are: Helen Louise, Robert Harlan, Gerald Earl, Russell Dean and Walter Lyle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and sister. In addition to his wife and children he leaves to mourn his passing one brother, Walter C. Armstrong, of Lexington, Mo., and one aunt, Mrs. N. M. Moody, of Macon, Mo., other relatives and friends.

He made his public confession of faith and trust in God and joined the Chariton Baptist church in April, 1924. He was devoted and faithful to his church and was a deacon at the time of his death.

Funeral services, under the direction of Mrs. Frank Dunshee funeral home were held Thursday, June 12, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist church. The Rev. William Peters officiated. Burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
