Born to Raymond Clarence and Nina Daughters Smith. Kent attended South High School in Salt Lake City and was a Sea Scout. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in August 1962. He volunteered for service in Viet Nam following a tour in the Far East. His tour of duty was to end in August 1966, but Kent volunteered to stay an extra year. Kent was a Sergeant (E5) and machine gunner (MOS:0331 M60 Machine Gunner) with F Co, 2nd Bn, 3rd Marines, 3rd MarDiv, III MAF. He died of wounds received in hostile action in the Quang Nam Province of South Viet Nam on July 20. Kent tripped a mine booby trap during an engagement at Phuong Trang (1) Route 4, about 8 kilometers West Southwest of Dai Loc. (Thanks to Tony for this additional information about Kent's location.)
