A native of Modesto, California and graduate of Dourney High School, Airman 1st Class Wood joined the United States Air Force and quickly found himself as a rescue loadmaster flying search and rescue missions in Saudi Arabia. On June 25, 1996, Wood was at Khobar Towers near Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, which was serving as a military housing facility, when terrorists set off a truck bomb destroying the building occupied by the 4404th Air Wing. Nineteen American airmen, including Airman 1st Class Wood, were killed in the blast. He was awarded the Purple Heart and laid to rest at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, becoming the cemetery's first military casualty.
