A memorial service for Anna "Pearl" Shields of Amity will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Amity Church of Christ, with the Rev. Larry Hake officiating.

Private interment will be in Amity Cemetery. The chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, will be open for visitation from 1 to 7 p.m. today and Friday.

Mrs. Shields died Nov. 8, 2001, in Alterra Wynwood, McMinnville. She was 90.

She was born April 14, 1911, in Arrow, the daughter of Ernest William and Bertha Evelyn Robison Groves. She attended Amity schools, graduating from Amity High in 1929. While a high school student, she worked in the Amity Bank.

She attended Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University) for two years and received a teaching certificate. She taught in Fern School in Polk County, Briedwell School in rural Amity and in McCoy, Monroe and West Salem. She then attended Wheaton College, where she was a housemother and worked in Lake Bluff Orphanage. After World War II, she taught in Cook Elementary School, McMinnville, for a year.

She and Hugh Garvin Shields were married Sept. 1, 1946, in Amity.

The couple bought a farm in the Sheridan area in 1950. She taught in Ballston School for 11 years. She also helped on the family farm in the summers, driving grain trucks during the hay and harvest seasons. She retired from teaching in 1970.

Mrs. Shields belonged to the Amity Church of Christ, the City Improvement Club, Yamhill County Historical Society and Amity Senior Citizens. She enjoyed fancy needlework, sewing, reading and gardening. She also enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing.

Survivors include four sisters, Ernestine Shields of McMinnville, Helen Anderson and Martha Fraley, both of Turner, and Dorothy Pryor of Bakersfield, Calif.; a brother, Elmer Groves of Everett, Wash.; a stepdaughter, Joyce Williams of Molalla; two stepgrandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and eight step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and by a brother, Frank Groves.
