"Sherman Monroe Alger was born in Jones County, Iowa April 18, 1866. He died in the Springfield Hospital at Springfield, MO, Dec 2, 1911 age 45 years, 14 days. He leaves a wife and 7 children, an aged mother, one sister and three brothers to mourn his death. The services were held at the church 5 miles west of Marshfield and the remains were laid to rest in the Welch Cemetery, J.W. Needham"
Sherman was the son of James Irwin Alger and Hester Monroe. His father died when he was 11 and he and his brothers and sister were left to care for their mother and selves. He and his brother Irwin went to Lead, S.D. when silver was found there in the mines. He met his wife Ottilie Henrietta Behrens there and they married in 1896 in Custer County, S.D. where they settled producing 8 children. His only daughter died at age 5. He was visiting his mother when he took ill and died in MO.
