Marshal Charles Henry Baker was shot and killed when he and his partner stopped a man who was suspected of robbing a bar. When they attempted to detain the man a struggle ensued. The suspect pulled out a handgun and shot Marshal Charles Baker and his partner. Marshal Charles Baker succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was apprehended four days later in Kentucky and was executed for the crime in 1986.

Charles Henry Baker, 51, of Montgomery, Texas passed away August 16, 1979 in Houston. He was born on December 27, 1927 in West Texas. Former Conroe and Houston Policeman and was presently a Houston City Marshal.


Survivors: Wife Dorothy Baker, Montgomery; son David Baker, Conroe; parents Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Baker, Montgomery; brother Clyde Baker, Houston; sisters Neida Griggs, Conroe and Donnie Serio, Houston; three grandchildren.


Funeral services Saturday, August 18, 1979 at 10:00 a.m., Metcalf Chapel of the Pines with Bro. Thomas Rutledge officiating. Interment to follow in Copeland Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers: Ray Kimberlin, Bob Wolfe, Ross McCommon, Sherman Hicks, Lt. Bill Holcombe, Sgt. Bob Trojan, Richard Burge, Robert McLemore. Honorary Pallbearers: All City Marshals of Houston.
