BETHEL MAN HAS MEMORIES OF 97 YEARS IN COUNTY

A native Delaware Countian, Robert Grant Ebright, is today observing his 97th birthday. Born during the Civil War, on Jan. 18, 1865, Ebright was named for General Ulysses S. Grant.: Grant Ebright lives with his daughter, Mrs. Lillie Ryan, on Naaman's Creek Road, Bethel, near Booth's Corner. He was born in his Grandfather Ebright's home which is located on Ebright Road one mile west of his present home. This homestead and farm of about 200 acres was in the Ebright family for several generations. Mr. Ebright is in good health and is able to walk out to the mail box and go for rides. He drove his own car until in his 80's and worked in his garden until he was 95. His eyesight, hearing, and mind are also good. In fact, he can recall his grandmother, Prudence Pierce Ebright who died more than 91 years ago. He remembers his grandfather Melchoir L. Ebright, who died more than 86 years ago. He remembers when his cousin, John M. Nicholson, a teamster, drove a four-head team hauling fire brick (from the brick yard which was near his home) to the steel mills in Chester and Wilmington. Sometimes John was stuck in the mud, axle deep, on the Naaman's Creek Road. Mr. Ebright also recalls seeing the Du Pont covered wagons that carried powder up the Wilmington road into upstate Pennsylvania. Grant Ebright remembers, when as a boy of not yet 10, he went over to the Black Horse on the Baltimore Pike and helped to drive home a flock of sheep which his grandfather and father had purchased in Phila. His Grandfather Ebright bought new axes for him, his brothers, and his cousins, so they could work in the woods. Here, they worked with oxen, logging. Grant's grandfather, who was in his 80's, also worked with them. Most of the wood was sold to the DuPonts. Later, Mr. Ebright farmed the old home place and went to the Wilmington market. In 1892 he married Anna Pyle, who died in 1938. Three of his six children are living. He also has 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Many of the Ebright family have lived to advanced age. Grant' Ebright's grandfather, Melchoir L. Ebright, died in 1875 at 82; his father, George W. Ebright, died in 1904 at 78; an uncle, Zachariah Ebright, died in 1911 at 87; his mother, Annie Watson Ebright, died in 1927 at 93; a cousin, Melchoir H. Ebright, died in 1932 at 80; cousin Rachel A. Ebright died in 1941 at 87; cousin John Melchoir Nicholson died in 1942 at 83; brother Barkley Ebright died in 1947 at 87 and cousin Walter W. Nicholson died in 1950 at 80. His uncle, Robert Watson, his mother's brother, and his father-in-law, Owen Z. Pyle, fought in the Civil War. The latter, one of the last Civil War veterans in Delaware County, died in 1938 at 96.
