Hugo's father was born in Moltzow, his mother in Faulenrost, both in Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany). They immigrated to America in Aug. 1854 and resided in Chicago.
Hugo married Caroline Kurtz in Chicago and they had two children there before moving to Detroit in early 1900.
Hugo was president of the Cadillac Printing Co. in Detroit.
He was a pastmaster of the Ashlar Masonic Lodge.
He also was a member in the Detroit Athletic Club, Kiwanis Club, Detroit Union League and the Players Club.
