Fond du Lac Reporter September 29, 2004. Maxwell “Buddy” Atkinson, 85, of Mount Calvary, died on Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at Villa Loretto Nursing Home in Mount Calvary. He was born on Jan. 18, 1919, in Mount Calvary, the son of the late Maxwell Sr. and Pauline Schmitz Atkinson. On Feb. 25, 1941, he married Myrtle Haensgen in Mount Calvary. She preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1994. He attended Holy Cross Grade School in Mount Calvary and senior high school in Fond du Lac. At various times he worked at Giddings & Lewis and was manager of the lumber company in Mount Calvary. He worked at Kiekhaefer Aeromarine. He retired in 1984 from the research and development department at Mercury Marine. He was a member of Mount Calvary Volunteer Fire Department since 1938, serving as director, officer, assistant chief and he was chief for 12 years. He served on the building committee of the Mount Calvary Community Hall. He helped establish the ambulance service and was an EMT for 10 years. He was a member of Holy Cross Parish and Adult Choir member. He served as a volunteer at church and school. He was a member of Parents Guild at St. Lawrence Seminary. He also worked at St. Labre Indian Mission in Montana in the maintenance department. Survivors include six children: Donna (John) Wagner of New Berlin, Terry (Jackie) Atkinson of Mount Calvary, Pat (Connie) Atkinson of Mount Calvary, Gary Atkinson of Fond du Lac, Bruce (Lori) Atkinson of Fond du Lac and Mark (Liz) Atkinson of Plymouth. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Joann Atkinson of Eau Claire. He is further survived by many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Agnes King of Appleton and Pauline Jeske of Larson, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one son, Phillip; two brothers, Donald and Willard; and one sister, Maxine Roehrig. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mount Calvary. The Rev. Gerald Pehler, OFM Cap., will officiate. Burial will be at the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Huss-Sippel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and again from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, when brief family rites will be held. A Wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Huss-Sippel Funeral Home of St. Cloud is assisting the family.
