Alfred was born to William and Mary Bullen, of Wootten Cottages, Rendle Street. William was a private in the Royal Marines, Mary was a Cloth Factory Hand; Alfred was their eldest child.

Alfred was on H.M.S Cumberland, North Atlantic Convoy duty.

By the time Alfred died, his father had already died in the war. William was lost on 1 November 1914 on H.M.S. Monmouth
