United States Ambassador. A native of California, Rodger Davies was appointed the United States Ambassador to Cyprus on May 2, 1974. In July of 1974, tension on Cyprus between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots erupted when the Greek Cypriots attempted a coup to take over the island and bring it into Greece. In response, Turkey entered Cyprus to protect the Turkish Cypriot population and occupied a third of the island. On August 19, 1974, during a demonstration outside the American Embassy in Nicosia, a sniper fired into the building, killing Ambassador Davies along with Antoinette Varnavas, a Greek Cypriot secretary.
