Myrtle Susan Smith, daughter of Robert Tom Smith and Sarah Eveline Brannon, was born near Nashville, Davidson Co., TN on 23 February 1886. Her parents were natives of Georgia. The R. T. Smith family arrived in the Judson community of Gregg Co., TX about 1897; they came from Franklin Co., GA. They bought a farm and settled down. Myrtle's siblings: William Henry (stayed in Georgia); Frances Cordelia "Delia" married Tom Gerome Freeman; Ivy Magnolia "Nolia" married Charlie Plummer; Lester Louis; Beulah Catherine "Peck" married T. A. Collins.

Myrtle Smith married Joe Freeman in Longview, TX on 6 December 1903. They were accompanied by Joe's step-father, T. W. Mitchell, who vouched for Myrtle's age by saying, "I've known this girl a long time and she's plenty old enough to get married." Joe and Myrtle settled down on a farm adjacent to her parents and were parents of three daughters: Jewell Violet "Sister;" Jodie Lavinna "Buddy;" Thelma Helen "Honeybaby." About 1918, the family bought a farm from Bob Smith and moved; Joe and Myrtle spent the rest of their lives there at the intersection of Fuller Road and FM 1844. Faithful members of Judson Baptist Church, the family rarely missed a service. Jewell often played the organ or piano while Joe led the singing. Myrtle cooked, sewed, and maintained an immaculate home while instilling Christian virtues in her daughters. Myrtle had a stroke and died in a Longview hospital on 7 July 1961. She was buried in Judson Cemetery.
