Myrtle Smith married Joe Freeman in Longview, TX on 6 December 1903. They were accompanied by Joe's step-father, T. W. Mitchell, who vouched for Myrtle's age by saying, "I've known this girl a long time and she's plenty old enough to get married." Joe and Myrtle settled down on a farm adjacent to her parents and were parents of three daughters: Jewell Violet "Sister;" Jodie Lavinna "Buddy;" Thelma Helen "Honeybaby." About 1918, the family bought a farm from Bob Smith and moved; Joe and Myrtle spent the rest of their lives there at the intersection of Fuller Road and FM 1844. Faithful members of Judson Baptist Church, the family rarely missed a service. Jewell often played the organ or piano while Joe led the singing. Myrtle cooked, sewed, and maintained an immaculate home while instilling Christian virtues in her daughters. Myrtle had a stroke and died in a Longview hospital on 7 July 1961. She was buried in Judson Cemetery.
