Gary N. Hepinstall, 64, of Midland, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at MidMichgan Medical Center. He was born in Midland on May 24, 1948, son of Bobby and Alice (Hammond) Hepinstall. He married the former Debbie Scribner on Sept. 12, 1976, in Midland.
Gary attended Midland Public Schools, graduating from Central Michigan University in 1970 with a bachelor's degree and later received his master's degree from CMU in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972 as a sergeant in the First Calvary Division in Viet Nam.
After returning from military service, Gary was employed at Nehil Lumber, then started Hepinstall Construction Company and finished his career at Design Craftsman in 2005. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Midland and a member of Sons of the Union Army. He also served on the Midland County Sheriff Reserve Association from 1974-2007. Gary was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved his annual fishing trip to Curtis in the U.P. on South Manistique Lake.
Gary is survived by his wife, Debbie Hepinstall of Midland; son, Scott Hepinstall of Saratoga Springs, Utah; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Travis Rundle of Bloomington, Ill. Gary loved being a grandpa to his two grandchildren, Tyler and Rachel Rundle. He is also survived by his mother, Alice Hepinstall; his sister and brother-in-law, Marilynn and Bill Watkins; and sister, Laurie Hepinstall all of Midland; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Hepinstall; and a sister, Amanda Hepinstall.
Funeral services for Gary will take place 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, from Our Savior Lutheran Church, with Pastor Larry Wright officiating. Interment will follow in Poseyville Cemetery, with military honors presented by the Midland Area Veterans and the U.S. Department of the Army. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St., and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of the service. Per Gary's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the charity of one's choice .
