Margaret Dean James was the daughter of Elizabeth May Evans (10 May 1854-18 Oct 1934) and Rev. Owen James (1847-1906), and the sister of Melville, Cleveland, Genevieve, Helen, Daniel, *Margaret, Gertrude, Elizabeth, Dorothy, and a baby who died before 1900.

In 1900, Margaret James is enumerated with her parents and eight living siblings at their home at 177 West Walnut Street, in Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

Her father, Rev. Owen James, passed in 1906.

In 1910, her widowed mother, Elizabeth James, age 55, and siblings, Cleveland, 26, Daniel, 19, *Margaret, 18, Gertrude, 15, Elizabeth, 13, and Dorothy, age 11, were enumerated at the family mortgaged home at 111 Summer Ave, Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania.

World War I Service:

Margaret Dean James served in WWI on active duty from 1 May 1918 to 4 August 1919, at Philadelphia PA, earning the rank of Chief Yeoman under service number 154-24-18.

She applied for Pennsylvania Veterans WWI compensation claim no. 282456, reporting her name as Margaret Dean James, her name change to Margaret Dean Gise, at address of 403 South 56th St., Philadelphia, PA. Her claim was approved. The file reports that she was honorably discharged on 19 Apr 1920 (due to lack of funds by the 4th Naval District, Philadelphia, Pa).

First Marriage: George Eugene Gise (15 Oct 1890-16 Aug 1937), as Margaret J. Gise or Mrs. Eugene Gise

In Dec 1919, her mother, Elizabeth (Mrs. Owen) James, announced in the newspaper that Margaret Dean James was married to G. Eugene Gise in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 10 Dec 1919. He was the son of Mattie Deibert and Harry Day Gise.

By the time of the 1920 US Census, Eugene Gise, 29, a newspaper artist, and his wife, Margaret J Gise, 27, a civil service clerk, were living at 2040 Chestnut St, Philadelphia, PA. According to later reports, Eugene was a cartoonist for the Reading Times.

They moved to New York, living at 43 E 27th St, while Eugene Giles continued working as an artist, and Margaret J. Giles worked as a private secretary, as of the 1925 NY Census.

In 1927, they travelled to England on US passports issued 22 Mar 1927, returning from Southampton on 22 Oct 1927 aboard the SS Albert Ballin, arriving in New York on 31 Oct 1927. Their home address was Rm 441, 26 Broadway, New York City.

In 1931, they again travelled to Europe, returning on 29 August 1931 from Boulogne-Sur-Mer aboard the SS Statendam to New York City, where they listed their address as 76 E. 54th St., New York, NY.

A death notice reported that Eugene Gise, age 46, passed on 16 Aug 1937 in Gotham Hospital, New York City, of tubercular meningitus, and that he had been a commercial artist associated with the advertising firm of Donohue and Coe of New York City.

Second Marriage: Walter Chauncey Camp, Jr. (19 Feb 1891-31 Dec 1940), as Margaret J. Camp or Mrs. Walter Camp, Jr.

On 3 May 1939, Margaret J. Gise, age 35, resident of New York, was married to Walter Camp, Jr., age 48, resident of West Los Angeles, in Yuma County, Arizona. They listed their address as 710 Warner Ave, Westwood Hills, West Los Angeles, California. He was the retired president of Inspirational Pictures.

The 1940 US Census enumerated Walter Camp Jr, 48, and his wife, Margaret, age 47, along with their domestic, Emily Borman, 58, widow, at 710 West A Street, Westwood Village. The newly constructed house was valued at 16000.

Walter Chauncey Camp Jr. passed on 31 Dec 1940 in Los Angeles. His obituary mentions that his wife Margaret J. Camp was formerly associated with the Mary Harriman Galleries in New York City.

She was director of arts and skills for the Los Angeles Red Cross and trustee and secretary of the Modern Institute of Art, Beverly Hills. She leaves a stepson, Walter Camp, III, of New York."
