Scarlet fever epidemic. She was the only one physically damaged by it, totally deaf.
She was age 2 also, and when asked by mom in 1960 if she ever remembered sound, she
said no. However, she said that she met her husband at a deaf dance that their 2 schools had.
He went to PA School for the Deaf, and she went to the Mt. Airy School for the Deaf. She was
very active in the All Souls Episcopal Church (for the deaf), and had many mutual friends with
grandpop for life. She was an extremely kind soul, and had a terrific sense of smell. More than once,
she smelled my dad peeling an orange- in the opposite end of the house downstairs. She was my second
mother. She died of a broken heart a year after grandpop did, they were really close, but they said it
was Angina. She was in perfect health up until that time. I will always remember her giving out fruit to
my friends outside that were playing with me when I was small.
