Joyce attended Fruita Schools and graduated from Fruita Union High School in 1942 and went on to graduate from the Ross Business School in Grand Junction, having many occupations throughout her life. She began her professional career as secretary to Congressman Wilson Rockwell in Washington, D.C. during the 1940s. She was then a farm wife, which included driving sugar beet trucks. For many years she worked as a job placement advisor for women in Grand Junction and Montrose.
Joyce was an active member of the Silver Bell Rebekah Lodge in Fruita for over 60 years, including serving as President of the Colorado Rebekah Assembly and in 1967 President of the International Rebekah Assembly. She traveled worldwide as President and Past President, with her multitude of friends in the Rebekah Lodge.
Among Joyce's many hobbies, she loved to knit. Two of her greatest passions were oil painting and horses. She was a member of Frontier Bells Sidesaddlers for 52 years. She was a horse-woman since the time she could sit on one. Joyce always had pets, dogs, cats and horses.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and by her brothers, Bill, Max and Leland Byers. She is survived by her husband, Forrest Thorpe of Fruita, CO; brother, Gordon (Dena) Byers of Rangely, CO; step-children, Barb (Norm) Warner of Ft Collins, CO; Todd Thorpe of Englewood, CO, and Stephen and Woody Thorpe of CA. She was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Joyce will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Silver Bell Rebekah Lodge, 1160 Primrose, Fruita, CO 81521 or Frontier Bells Sidesaddlers, P.O. 1344, Grand Junction, CO 81502.
