He married Sara Belle Loraw, September 3, 1938 in Oakland, Garrett Co., MD. Sara Belle died March 26, 1999. Sara Belle and Milton had three daughters. , Marilyn Kay Groves (Darrell Wiley), Carol Ann Myers (Richard Leroy) and Linda Lou Johnson (Robert Joseph).
Milton attended Masontown, Preston County schools. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp at age 16. He served at Camp Copperhead, Company 3539, near, Frost, Pocahontas Co. ,WV
He volunteered for and served in the Merchant Marines during WW II. He crossed the Equator six times in one year, passed through the Panama Canal twice delivering fuel to Eniwetok Island (now Enewetak) , sailed to ports in Scotland and to the port of Naples, Italy.
For a short time, he owned a coal mine and a sawmill. He began working in the mines at age 15. He was a member of the UMW Local 1058, a certified mine foreman and a member of the Mine Safety and Rescue Team. He retired from Consol Energy Inc.
He was a member of the Board of the Preston Memorial Hospital. He was a Mason, a member of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, A.F. & A.M, Preston Lodge #90, Kingwood, WV and a 14th degree A&A Scottish Rite of the Valley of Morgantown Orient of WV.
Milton was an avid motor boater, camper, hunter and fisherman. He boated the Cheat and Monongahela Rivers. He and Sara Belle loved to travel to Montana to fish Frank's Lake, the Madison River and Crow Creek Lake, but their favorite place to camp and fish was Seneca Creek, Pendelton Co., WV
He enjoyed CB and HAM radios. He attended HAM events in Niagara Falls, NY, Janesville, WI, Peoria and Decatur, IL and Branson, MO. He became qualified as an Extra Class amateur HAM operator at 82 years of age.
He loved country music, old country. He attended country music festivals, the Lorain County Fair in Ohio, the Wheeling Jamboree, shows in Branson, MO and the Grand Old Opera.
He was often quoted in newspapers, West Virginia magazines and by anyone who had asked him about family relationships or local history. He was a "fixture" at the Masontown Senior Citizens donut and coffee hour.
He was eight years old when his twelve year old friend, Charlie Hawkins tattooed a drawing of Popeye on his arm. Charlie remained his friend for life. Charlie always called him "Grizz".
He will be buried in the Masontown Cemetery next to his wife, parents and other family members.
Milton requested that the viewing and services be restricted to his family. The family plans to have a reception to remember Milton that will be held at the Methodist Church Youth Center in Masontown at 1 PM Saturday the 19th of February.
