He was the elder of two sons of Russell Bromley, who, when setting up his shoe company, had given it both his names to suggest that it was more than merely a one-man enterprise. At the age of 17, he was removed early from Rugby to be apprenticed to the Bally shoe company in Switzerland, where he learned the business of making footwear on the factory floor; he also learned the supreme importance of design.
