Darwin was a son of Mason Darwin Abbott and Angeline Marie Tenney. He married Elizabeth Beals Driggs and they had an adopted daughter, Lucy.
Darwin came to the United States at a young age with his family. He owned a picture framing business in Huntington's west end known as the D. E. Abbott & Co. He died at his residence, 725 9th Street West, from pneumonia.
