John Acker, for 25 years janitor of the courthouse and who in recent years had conducted a boarding house at the corner of North Tenth and Superior Avenue, died this morning.
News of his death will come as a shock to a wide circle of friends in this city and throughout the county, as few were aware that his illness was of a grave nature.
Mr Acker, who was 54 years of age, had been in poor health for some time, suffering from heart disease, but not until the past 10 days had his condition become alarming during which period he had been confined to his bed. Shortly before five o’clock this morning he suffered a stroke and death followed.
Mr Acker was born in this city February 11, 1864, and when he grew to manhood, served as deputy sheriff for a time and as a janitor of the courthouse.
His father, John Acker, was janitor before him, and upon his retirement his son was elected to succeed him. In that capacity he won added friends, and had the endorsement of every administration, irrespective of party.
January 12, 1887 Mr Acker was married to Miss Theresa Kress, of Centerville. There were eight children born to them of which four of them preceded him in death. He is survived by the widow and four children: Miss Anna Acker, Clemens Acker and Cecelia Acker, at home, and Joseph Acker who is stationed at Camp Custer. He also leaves one brother, Clemens Acker, and three sisters, Mrs. Casper Schieble, Mrs Henry Augustin and Mrs. Anton Kraus, all of this city.
Mr Acker was a member of the Gegenseitigen Kranken Unterstuetzung Verein, the St Boniface Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Concordia Society.
The decedent was a man not given to show, but a true friend, and his sterling traits of character endeared him to a large and warm list of acquaintences.
