GILMER Services for Brother Jimmie Loyd J.L. Cross Sr., 74, of Gilmer will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at Antioch Baptist Church in Upshur County with the Rev. Ray Thompson and Brother Larry Lansdale officiating. Burial will follow in Grice Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer.

Brother Jimmie Loyd J.L. Cross Sr. went to his heavenly mansion on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, while in Leakey on a successful hunting trip with his two sons, Jimmie and Norris, and his friend Julian Calderon.

Brother J.L. was born Aug. 14, 1930, in the Grice community to Lamon and Annie Dacus Cross. He was a 1948 graduate of Harmony High School and later attended classes at the BMA Seminary in Jacksonville. Upon graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country as a surgery technician during the Korean War. He retired from Trailmobile as a general foreman in 1982.

More important than his secular vocations, however, was his devotion to the Lord. On March 3, 1954, J.L. surrendered to the ministry and began his journey with the Lord as a minister. During his almost 50 years of ministry, he pastored several area churches, including Rhonesboro Missionary Baptist Church, Latch Missionary Baptist Church, Concord Missionary Baptist Church and Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where he was pastor for 21 years. At the time of his death, he was the pastor of Little Mound Missionary Baptist Church.

J.L. was an avid deer hunter and each year looked forward to the fall, when he and his sons could go hunting together.

Brother J.L. loved his family, his church and life in general. Many things can be said about him, but all point to the same basic thought: J.L. loved the Lord with all his heart, mind and soul and wanted to share that love with everyone he met. Heaven was very real to him, and he shared that message in his daily walk. Today he's in the presence of the Lord in his heavenly home.

J.L. was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathy Williams Cross; his parents; and two sisters, Doris Brown and Melba Holder.

Left to cherish his memories are wife Deborah McDonald Cross, daughter Sandra Kay Cross, son Jimmie Loyd Cross Jr. and his wife, Jan, and son Norris Edward Cross, all of Gilmer; two granddaughters and their spouses, Jana and David Shilson of Little Elm and Amy and Wes Nance and daughter Skyler of Paris; a stepson and his wife, Grady and Robin McDonald, and children Patrick and Emily of Pritchett, and many, many dear friends.

Pallbearers will be Wayne James, Kenny Thompson, Jed Whitaker, Grady McDonald, Wes Nance and David Shilson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Goodwin, Joe Jack Lyle, David Jones, Joe Pool, Stephen Gipson, Duane James, Doyle Taylor, Wendell Stafford, Bret Myers, Billy Hope Thompson, Travis Shipp, Lawrence Woodle, Tommy Smith and Ervin McCellon.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, Dec. 14, at the funeral home.
