EPHRIAM DENT DIES THURSDAY AT HIS HOME
County Loses
Outstanding Citizen as J. Ephriam Dent Passes
Mr. Joseph Ephriam Dent,
prominent Newnan and Coweta county citizen, passed away at his home on College
street early Tuesday morning, July 17th, after an illness of several weeks.
Mr.
Dent was born October 5, 1865, in Newnan in the vicinity of Newnan, in which he
lived all of his life. He was the son of Ephriam and Elizabeth Stegall Dent,
and the grandson of the Rev. W. W. Stegall, a prominent Methodist minister. Mr.
Dent’s father was one of the pioneer citizens of Coweta county, and builders of
the county, in which respect Mr. Dent continued throughout his life.
Mr. Dent
attended the schools in Newnan and graduated for the Business College in
Poughkeepsie, N. Y. In December, 1892, he married Miss Maud Scroggins. He was
a member of the Methodist church.
Mr. Dent became interested in the cotton
business early in life, and continued in that business until the time of his
illness. He also had farming interests in the county.
Mr. “Eph”, as he was
affectionately called, won to him by his good-natured friendliness, his loyalty,
and his willingness to help people. He was a devoted husband and brother. His
friends were not limited to his sphere of life or to his age. He had a great
love for children and they loved him.
Mr. Dent was very active in the civic
life of Newnan. To any aid or suggestion asked of him, he always acquiesced
willingly, and in Mr. Dent’s passing Newnan has lost one of her most helpful and
proud citizens.
Surviving Mr. Dent are his wife, a brother, Mr. Heard W. Dent;
three sisters, Mrs. George Ramey, Atlanta; Mrs. Ernest Powel, and Mrs. Tolleson
Kirby, both of Newnan; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services,
largely attended, were held Wednesday morning at the grave-side, with the Rev.
A. M. Pierce officiating. Pallbearers were Mr. Roy Brown, Mr. Edgar Reynolds,
Mr. W. B. Davis, Mr. Wade Stallings, Mr. Ellis Peniston, Mr. W. W. Kirby, Mrs.
Bill Davis, and Mr. J. G. Manget.
