He was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Macon, Ga., a son of the late Charles Christopher and Arrie Mae Newton Ellis.
He was owner of H.W. Ellis Construction Co. and owned and captained "The Mermaid" on which he carried fishing parties. He built an amphibious boat named "Lan-N-Sea."
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach and a 40-year lifetime member of Myrtle Beach 353 AFM. He was a founder and member of Myrtle Beach Outboard Motor Club and charter member of Woodmen of the World.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Benton Ellis; a son, Jerry Ellis and his wife, Donna, of Longwood, Fla.; a daughter, Patricia Ellis Harrell of Myrtle Beach; four grandchildren, Ann Marion and her husband, Robert, of Murrells Inlet, William M. Roberson and his wife, Renee, of Myrtle Beach, J. Bradley Ellis and his wife, Cathy, of Live Oak, Fla., and Patrick S. Ellis of Longwood; six great-grandchildren, J. Cole Williams and his wife, Rachel, of Cherry Point, N.C., Mathew G. Williams of Murrells Inlet, Jason F. Marion of Charleston, R. Michael Marion of Myrtle Beach, Jerry M. Roberson of Myrtle Beach and Meagan Ellis of Live Oak; two brothers, Cecil Ellis of Chalmette, La., and Charles L. Ellis of Orange, Texas; and a sister, Gladys Ellis Ammons Tobin of Myrtle Beach.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, beach chapel.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach. The Revs. Wayne Brown and Carl Compton will officiate. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Ocean Woods Cemetery.
