Born in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of the late James Harris Echols and Nell Taylor Echols.
Mr. Echols was a graduate of the University of Alabama, and owner of Echols Casual Shops for 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he was a combat pilot, flight instructor and flew B-25s in World War II. He was a former member of Central Park Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Ala., where he served as a deacon. He was a current member of First Presbyterian Church of Greenville, where he was a former member and treasurer of the Good Neighbor Sunday School Class.
He was a member and past president of the Pleasantburg Lions Club, the Pleasantburg Merchants Association, the Carolina Investment Club, the Senior Golf Association of South Carolina, and was a member of the Greenville Country Club and the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. He was a Mason and was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple of Greenville.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his daughter, Susan Echols Todd and her husband, Walter B. Todd, of Columbia; a brother, Charles William Echols of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Claude Townsend Sullivan III and Allen Echols Sullivan of Atlanta, Ga., Lise Ewing Anzelone and her husband, Rick, of Greenville, and Linda Evelyn Ewing of Columbia; and a great-granddaughter, Devin Nicole Parrish. He was predeceased by a daughter, Diane Davenport Echols; a sister, Annalu Echols Brown; and a brother, James Harris Echols Jr.
Services will be Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at 2 p.m. at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive, with the Rev. George Allen Moore officiating, with visitation prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
