Calvin enlisted as a recruit on February 14, 1864, and with other recruits he said in a postwar letter "crossed the River at Davenport to Rock Island on the ice in early spring & went to join our Regiment."
While original enlistees were preparing to be mustered out at Baton Rouge in July 1865, Calvin and other recruits were transferred as "unassigned recruits" on July 12, 1865, to the 34th/38th Consolidated Infantry while 464 of the original 985 enlistees who were still with the regiment were mustered out on July 15, 1865, and started north the next day.
Calvin and other recruits were sent to Texas but it was realized almost immediately that their services were no longer needed and he was mustered out at Houston on August 5, 1865, and later discharged at Davenport. On December 16, 1888 from "Lee Allegan co. Mich." he wrote the above letter to the Adjutant General of Iowa indicating he was a basketmaker when he enlisted, was residing two or three miles south of Delhi at the time but had lost his discharge papers about "twelve years ago & feel that I should like to have something to show that I was there although my memory is failing me."
