Rev. Francis A. Moore: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
San Jose Mercury News (CA) - March 27, 2003
Deceased Name: Rev. Francis A. Moore
Los Gatos CA United States

MOORE, S.J., Rev. Francis A. -- in Los Gatos, CA on Monday, March 24, 2003 at age 86. A Jesuit for 68 years, he entered the Jesuits upon graduation from Shasta Union High School in Redding, CA. Following his studies of Philosophy at Mount St. Michael's in Spokane, Frank was assigned to teach English at Santa Clara University (1941-44) where he was also in charge of boarding students. A life- long baseball devotee and player, during the war years when Santa Clara did not have a baseball team, Frank and another Jesuit scholastic, Joseph Keane, suited up and played for the Army Student Training Program team sponsored by Santa Clara. He was ordained a priest in 1947 and during a year of post-ordination studies Frank wrote a paper in favor of professional baseball player's rights against the 'reserve clause' which favored the owners. The paper was published and subsequently Frank was brought to Washington, D.C. to present his reasoning to a Congressional Sub-Committee that was debating the issue. When challenged for lack of baseball credentials by a congressman opposing his position, Frank replied, 'Congressman, I would rather play baseball than eat.' Between 1949 and 1952 Frank was assigned first to the Novitiate at Los Gatos and then as Chaplain to students at U.S.F. In 1952, responding to a need for military chaplains due to the Korean War, Frank entered the Navy and received a commission as a Navy Chaplain. He served with the 3rd Marine Division. He once celebrated Mass at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. His brother, Richard was entombed in the sunken battleship - he had been serving in the Marine Guard on the ship when it was attacked. From 1954 to 1962 Frank served as Dean of Students at U.S.F. In 1962 he began an almost 38 year assignment at Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, AZ where he served at various times as President, Rector and Director of Development. This assignment was interrupted by a two year stint as Director of Development at Jesuit High in Sacramento. A stand-up, straight-talking man not given to nuance, Frank was a pillar at Brophy and great animator of a wide spectrum of lay colleagues with whom he saw Brophy through some difficult times to prosper as a college prep school. While in Phoenix he also served in a variety of service organizations including: the Boy Scouts of America, the Peace Corps Service Council, the Board for Alcoholism and Mental Health and the Junior Achievement Board. Frank was an avid tennis player and had many good friends at the Phoenix Country Club. In addition to assisting with pastoral needs as they arose in the Phoenix area, for decades he served during the summers at St. Theresa Parish in South Lake Tahoe where he also had the opportunity to pursue his interest in backpacking. He was an amateur historian and an accomplished carpenter. He once built a casket of pine for his own eventual use, but he did not bring it to Los Gatos when assigned there in 2000 due to failing health, an irony that would not be lost on him. In retirement his gentle, compassionate side blossomed and he was a great gift and encouragement to his brother Jesuits at Sacred Heart Center where he assisted in any way that he was able to. His strength of character, wry humor and deepfaith will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his cousins: Carol Holley of San Francisco and June Powell of Sacramento. Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 29, both at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. Committal will follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara. There will also be a Memorial Mass in Phoenix at the Brophy Chapel at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 1. Donations may be made to the Development Fund at Brophy College Prep in memory of Fr. Francis Moore, S.J. Arrangements by DARLING-FISCHER CHAPEL OF THE HILLS MORTUARY, Los Gatos, CA.
