Mr. Hutchcraft was born June 17, 1932, in Aden, Crouch Township, Hamilton County IL, a son of Clyde R. and Ella O. Bond Hutchcraft. He married Gail E. Hahn on Nov. 9, 1958, at the American Lutheran Church in Gibson City, IL. She survives in Gibson City.
Also surviving are a daughter, JoAnne Hutchcraft, Champaign IL, a granddaughter, Jody (fiancé Aaron Sampson) Cline, whom he raised, Rantoul IL; great-granddaughter, Rachel L. Thomas, age 6; a great-grandson Isaac A. Sampson, age 3, both of Rantoul; grandson, Jordan Carl Hutchcraft Adams, a senior at Central High School in Champaign IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Troy C. Hutchcraft; sister, Velma Dean Hutchcraft Trimble; and a brother, Frederick M. Hutchcraft. His faithful Shih Tzu Omelette died Monday, Oct. 11, of a broken heart and will be buried with Bob today.
Bob graduated from Gibson City High School in 1951, where he played football and basketball. After graduating, he entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Texas until 1955. From 1955 to 1963, he was a jet engine instructor at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul IL. From 1963 to 1970, he was a Prudential Insurance agent and then in 1971, he owned the Mac Tools, then Matco Tools, franchise serving Ford, McLean and Logan counties, retiring from that in 2002. He then went to work at County Market in Gibson City as a grocery bagger. He never got to see the new mural in the remodeled store – he is pictured with the M&W Little Red Wagon in 1971. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Gibson City Greyhounds, the GCMS Falcons and the Fighting Illini, especially the Chief! He enjoyed stock car racing and reading Civil War, World War II and airplane books. He was a member of the Gibson City Bible Church, Lee Lowery American Legion, Elliot Amvets, and the Chanute AFB museum. He attended the recent Tea Party meetings and was a member of the McDonald's morning coffee group.
Together with his wife Gail, he enjoyed being a dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa; attending auctions and garage sales; and going on spontaneous short trips. He appreciated Gaither, Southern gospel and bluegrass music; visiting with friends at class reunions and the Greyhound festivals; and going on genealogy trips to Connecticut; Bourbon County, KY; and Hamilton County. As Ford County genealogist volunteers, they worked together in helping researchers as far away as Sweden and Alaska to find their ancestors from Ford County. In the fall of 1989, he was chosen to participate in the nationwide Chevy Truck commercials in Ford County.
Bob had a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ – and to quote a dear friend, "We know right now that Bob is in heaven sitting on Cloud Nine exchanging jokes with St. Peter and son, Troy."
