"WELLS, Vt. -- Robert Wayne Wood, 59, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at Rutland Regional Medical Center as a result of a three-month battle with invasive bladder cancer.

Robert was born on April 1, 1950, in Oakland, Calif., the son of Tharo "Woody" and Pearl Wood.

A native of California, Robert left this life as one of the most beloved men in the state of Vermont, known for his sincerity, kindness, generosity, honesty, spirit and love of life. Robert was a machinist by trade. His free and adventurous spirit lead him to develop varied passions. He was an inventor, a musician and songwriter. When he was living on the Sonoma Coast of California, he was a professional fisherman and also enjoyed panning for gold. At the age of 16, he was the youngest licensed diving instructor in California, which continues to date and was also a deep-sea diver. Robert was an avid historian, a gardener and lover of wildlife and marine life. He was also a motorcycle enthusiast.

He was predeceased by his parents and his only other sibling a sister, Pamela Suriano.

In addition to his wife, Carroll (Andrus) Wood, Robert is survived by his children: Jeffrey Wood Nunes of Chattenoga, Tenn., Melanie J. Hanson of Reno, Nev., Casey M. Wood and Dayna Reese; six grandchildren; two great-granchildren; one nephew; two nieces, 4 great-nephews and two great nieces.
