He was born in Wood County, son of the late Rev. James F. and Bessie May Collett Atkinson. He was employed at the American Viscose Division of FMC and also worked for Ames for several years. He retired as a self-employed carpenter. He was affiliated with the Seventh Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Mary M. Somerville Atkinson; one brother, Duke Atkinson of Parkersburg; one sister, Eloise Carrol of Parkersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother and eight sisters.
Services 2:30 p.m. Friday, Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg. Burial Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
