When his brothers and cousins were enlisting in the Union army William enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as a member of Martin E Green's Brigade in Gen Price's army. Later for Captain Alexander Lemur in the 3rd Missouri Light Artillery, it was attached to Gen MM Parson's Missouri brigade.

When Gen Lee surrendened William was in Arkansas. He did not wish to return to Missouri so he went to Texas. He reached San Antonio in August 1865; a few days before the federal troops arrived.

He was a pioneer resident of Bexar county and made his home in Adkins; living there until his death.

William married Susan Savannah Trent on March 32, 1866 in Bexar county. They had 11 children: Rachael Naomi, Alice, Amy, Sarah/Sallie, William, Ross, Lelia/Delia, Vera, Jesse, Lula, and Bessie.

He was Bexar County Constable in precinct 4.

In 1890 was elected to serve Bexar County in the Texas House of Representatives. Serving in the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Legislatures. In May 1891 was appointed by Governor James S Hogg a delegate to the 1st Western Commercial Congress.

William was one of the trustees who had the first public school built in Bexar County; now know as Fox Tech High School.

William and his wife Susan donated the land for this cemetery.
