GEORGE WASHINGTON ROSS

Son of Francis Ross and Nancy Boyd Ross of Neshoba County, Mississippi.

At the beginning of the Civil War (1861-1865), George W. Ross, along with four (4) of his brothers, were all Privates in Company "D", Eleventh Regiment of Mississippi Infantry, CSA. Company "D" was known as the Neshoba Rifles and was mustered into the State army at Neshoba on April 13, 1861. A. H. Franklin was captain of this company.

During the course of the war the Eleventh participated in more that 40 engagements, including battles, sieges, and skirmishes. Between July 21, 1861 and August 1, 1863, it fought in the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Seven Pines, the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the disaster that was Gettysburg.

Fifteen thousand men went with Pickett up the slope of Cemetery Ridge, and less than five thousand came back down. The Eleventh's casualties were reported as 32 killed, 170 wounded. The Neshoba Rifles took 55 men into the charge. At roll call that evening, 10 answered. The rest had been killed, wounded, or captured.

After the war, George W. Ross moved to Leon County, Texas where some of his brother's were then living.

He married Nancy (Nannie) Jane Rigby of Leon County, Texas and they had the following children:

1. Samuel Eugene, mar. Florence Carswell of Goldthwaite, TX. Children: Yvette; Eugene; Alyne.

2. Robert Erskine, mar. Clarinda Owen of Goldthwaite, TX. Children: Lucille.

3. William Farror, Died at about 4 years of age.

4. Waddy Russell, mar. Laura Hicks of Goldthwaite, TX. Children: Elizabeth.
Married (2nd) Callie Hicks (Laura's sister) after Laura's death, and they had one daughter: Mary Russell.

Note: From Milton A. Stephens

The above record was compiled by my father, Eugene B. Stephens, by records left by Dora Wilhelmina Ross, Lee Della Hickman, Waddy Monroe Ross and Robert Erskine Ross, as well as U.S. Census records and the old Bible of Francis and Nancy Boyd Ross. This old Bible was in the possession of Lee Della Hickman in 1951, but disposition after her death is unknown at the present time. (1980)
