Carlos Plant Collins was born on August 16, 1851 in Corinth Center, Vermont, the son of Amos Pettingill Collins and Lucinda (Sawyer) Collins. He moved from Vermont to Wisconsin with her parents in 1865, and several years later they were farming in Bremer County, Iowa.

He was married on March 6, 1873 at Horton to Susan Alma Dyer (1850-1934).

Carlos went into farming on his own, then began working for a lumber and farm machinery firm, first as a salesman and then as manager of the business at Waverly, where he and his family lived until about 1890, before moving to Grand Forks, North Dakota. It was there that he worked for lumber yard owner Mr Garner, shipping and selling horses. Later Carlos and a Mr Stensen became partners selling machinery, wood and coal.

When his son Roy moved into the Yellowstone Valley in Montana in 1901, Carlos became interested in the area as well, and he invested in land there, filing on a homestead - as his son Roy had done - on July 20, 1903 in Township 24, Range 59, Carlos in Section 12 and son Roy in Section 15.

Along with his son, he settled 5 miles southwest of Fairview where the two of them conducted business under the name Spring Valley Ranch, breeding Percheron horses and purebred Herford cattle at Ridgelawn. Eventually they began farming and ultimately developed one of the more extensive farms in that region.

Carlos left the ranch in 1913 to become a partner in, and manager of, Alling Mercantile & Lumber Coompany in Fairview. He was also associated with the banking interests there, and when Richland County was created from Dawson County, he was one of its first commissioners.

Living in Fairview, he was almost 74 years old when he passed away on August 11, 1925. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, just across the state line in North Dakota.
