Father John Patrick McHugh S.J. died in Baton Rouge on Friday, July 15, 1977, of a heart attack.

Father McHugh was born in Saint Louis , Missouri, on July 3, 1903. He entered the Society of Jesus in Macon, Georgia, on July 28, 1921, and was ordained a priest at St. Mary's Kansas, in June of 1934.

Early in his life as a Jesuit, Father McHugh conceived an interest in the Spanish-speaking apostolate and studied Spanish in Cuba and Mexico. Most of his priestly ministry was exercised in Florida and West Texas.

He was principal of Jesuit High of Tampa from 1937 to 1941 and principal of St. Ignatius College in Puerto Rico from 1953 to 1957. He also served in Albuquerque and Mexico City. Since 1966 his main work has been retreats.

From 1968 to 1976 he was assistant director of Manresa Retreat House in Convent, Louisiana. Since August 1976, he has been an associate pastor of St. Joseph Cathedral in Baton Rouge.

Father John Patrick McHugh (Society of Jesus), on Friday evening, July 15, 1977; age 74 years; a native of St. Louis, Missouri and a resident of Baton Rouge, La.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will take place on Monday, July 18, 1977 at 10 o'clock a.m. from the St. Joseph Cathedral, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Interment in the Jesuit Cemetery, Grand Coteau, La.

The body will lie in state from 3 until 8 o'clock p.m. on Sunday, and after 8 o'clock a.m. , Monday at the Cathedral.
