Alfred W. Stoughton was born on 3 Feb. 1832, in West Bloomfield, MI and he lived in Michigan all his life. In 1850, he is still at home with his parents and farming, in Phelpstown, MI. In the1860 census he is listed in West Bloomfield, MI and is married and has one boarder, Samuel E. Clay, age 23 living with him as labor and we feel this Samuel may have been the brother of Simeon Clay, the husband of his Sister Sophrona..[2]

On 9 May 1864, in Flint, MI, he enlisted in the 14th Michigan Infantry Regiment as a Private. He was assigned to Company "U" and he mustered out on 15 May 1865, at Hart's Island, New York Harbor, with Meritorious Service Honors.

In 1880, he was living in Bath, MI and was working on the Railroad, but it is not listed what his job was. Susan (Stoughton) Clark, age 19 was living with them and her husband is not listed here and, in 1900 he was still residing in Bath, MI and he was 68 years old and was listed as employed in farming. His daughter Ida Stewart was living with them and she is widowed and is employed as a Dress Maker and their Granddaughter Vera Stewart, age 17, was there also. Alfred died on 14 Nov. 1913 and is buried with his wife, Lucy.

He married Lucy Ann Haskins on 28 Oct. 1856. She was born on 27 Feb. 1837, in Michigan and died on 21 Feb. 1904, in Bath, MI. She is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in Bath, Michigan ‘

His children are:

1. Ida M. Stoughton, born 1857; married Henry W. Stewart (1855 – Bef 1900) on 18 Aug. 1878 and had issue: Vera Stewart, born Jul 1882, in Michigan..

2. Susan S. Stoughton, born 6 Dec. 1860, in Bath, MI; died 1923, in Bath, MI; married Charles A. Clark on 14 Dec. 1879 and had issue:
a. Edna Clark, born Sept 1882.
b. Laverne Clark, born Nov. 1884.
c. Ava H. Clark, born 27 Feb. 1890; died 27 Dec 1989, in Seattle, WA
d. Lucy Clark, born May 1892.

3. Eudelmer Haskins "Delbert" Stoughton, born 22 Jul 1863; lived in Cook County, Illinois, in 1930, was a Rail Road Foreman; in 1887 married Ida May _____. (1865 – aft 1930) who was born in Maine and had issue: [3]
a. Maurice Stoughton, born. 1894.

4. Burdette Minor Stoughton, [4] born 19 Feb. 1874, was a student in 1900 and a Bookkeeper for a construction company in 1920. No known marriages. Died 25 Nov. 1951, in King County, Washington. Probably buried in that area.
