Frederick was known as Frank. He came to America as a baby, lived several years in Missouri, then moved to California in about 1860. The family settled in Hornitos, Mariposa County, where Frank apprenticed to the butcher George Reeb. In the 1870s he set out on his own, establishing a butcher shop in Vallejo with a partner, then in Benicia. He met and married Elizabeth Jane Powers, with whom he had five sons and a daughter. (Lester Joseph died as an infant.) He panned for gold in the streams during his vacations, finding enough for several pieces of family jewelry. He contracted tuberculosis by 1899, necessitating a move to Oroville for his health. He died there. Interment date was April 14, 1900.
