DEFREESTVILLE -- James F . Herbert Sr., age 84, died January 17, 2004 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Defreestville, he was the son of the late Catherine Lyons Herbert and Frank Herbert . A graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and St. Michael's College, Winooski, Vt., he served in the United States Army Chemical Warfare Division during World War II and was discharged with the rank of Captain. Proprietor of Herbert 's Pharmacy in Defreestville, he worked for the NYS Lottery and retired as a training officer for the State Division of Military & Naval Affairs. Active in local politics, he served as Collector of Taxes and Supervisor of the Town of North Greenbush. Proud of his `St. Mike's` experience, he was devoted to fund raising and annual homecoming events. In 1980, he received recognition as alumnus of the year. In 1990, he celebrated induction into the Golden Knights Club as a 50 year alumnus. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Rensselaer since its founding. Predeceased by his wife, Preget Funaro Herbert , after 58 years of marriage, they shared many happy winters in Port Charlotte, Florida with family and friends. A loving father, he is survived by his children, Eileen Herbert of East Greenbush, James F . (Anna) Herbert Jr. of East Greenbush and Judy (Gerald) Wainman of Defreestville; grandfather of Kristy Poindexter, Erin Buckley, Jaime and Josh Wainman, Jessica, Kevin, Brian and Melissa Herbert ; great-grandfather of Lauren Guynup and Ashton Buckley; brother of Margaret McMahon and Catherine Bayly of Defreestville and predeceased by Martin, Michael, Frank and Sr. Mary Gervais Herbert RSM. Funeral from the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer, Tuesday morning at 9:30 and 10:30 at St. Joseph's Church, Rensselaer where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Monday from 4-7 p.m. Internment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.
