Emanuele "Campy" Campanella, 89, of Sterling, passed away Oct. 18, 2010, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at First Foursquare Church, with the Rev. Ben Hackbarth officiating. Interment will be Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Campy was born July 10, 1921, in Genoa, Italy, to Gaetona and Mary Campanella. He was the last Italian living in Sterling who was born in Italy.
He worked in Italy in an auto electric shop until he was inducted into the army. He was captured in Africa and taken prisoner.
Later, they were brought to Sidney, Neb., to Sioux Ordinance Depot. While there, he met Edith Rocker of Sterling. She worked nearby. After the war, they went to Italy and were married there. They returned to Sterling in June 1947, just before the birth of their daughter, Lena. They had two other daughters and a son.
Campy was employed as a mechanic for several businesses in Sterling until 1950. He bought Cedar Creek Service.
His wife passed away in July 1961 after a serious illness. On Dec. 28, 1963, he married Joanne Roys of Sterling.
In June 1976, he sold Cedar Creek Services to Don Robirds. He continued to work with Don until 1981. He bought the old packing plant east of Sterling Livestock where he ran Campy's Motors until 1988, when he sold it to Bob and Judy Webb. He continued to work there for a while.
He then moved his dealership to Cedar Creek and worked with Don Robirds. Don was his salesman. He was there in 2004 when Cedar Creek Services closed. In April 2005, he started working at Marsaus.
Campy loved fishing and sports, especially baseball and football. He enjoyed occasionally singing solos in church, funerals and other events.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne Campanella of Sterling; daughters, Maryann Campanella of Duluth, Minn., and Jenny Campanella of Colorado Springs; son, Mario, in a group home in Fort Morgan; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Iole and her family of Genoa, Italy; a host of friends and a number of relatives by marriages.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mario; and a daughter, Lena Snyder.
