Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and Priest for the Diocese. Ordained on May 27, 1965, Father Rankin provided over 40 years of service throughout San Diego. Among his many assignments he served as pastor of the Immaculata 1979-1983.

Interment at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
