Casket burial. Reinterred in Oak Mound Cemetery from Japan on 12 Jun 1948.

Born in Oakport Township and grew up on his parents' farm there. Attended Oak Mound School. While growing up was a member of the Oak Mound 4-H Club where he served as club treasurer. U.S. Marines WWII. Wounded on Saipan Island and was awarded the purple heart in 1945. He was killed on Iwo Jima Island. Gene was a lifelong member of Oak Mound Congregational Church and was baptized and confirmed there. (Associational quote: "We'll call me Oscar and you'll be Louie").

Gene was originally buried in Japan and his body was re-interred in Oak Mound Cemetery on June 12, 1948. His gravestone was originally a "cenotaph," meaning that a gravestone is present but the body is not. Historically, a stone was indicted to be a cenotaph if the phrase "In Memory of" preceded the person's name. This is the case with Gene's stone, but now that his body has been laid to rest in Oak Mound Cemetery, his stone is no longer a cenotaph and is a regular gravestone. The phrase "In Memory of" still remains on the stone, however.
