"I dare you to wade across the pond," called Jarvin [sic] Benskin, 12, to Clyde Grossharth; 11, Friday afternoon about 4 o'clock as with three other lads they were playing beside a large hole filled with water in a neld (sic) between Tuscarawas street and Raff road SW, Canton.
The Grossharth lad accepted the dare and the two boys started wading into the hole. When the water began to get deeper the Grossharth boy turned back and called to young Benskin to return.
The lad kept on until suddenly his feet lost the bottom and the sand struggling into the muddy water. He rose to the surface of the pond in a few seconds, gasping for breath and screaming. His playmates became alarmed and ran for help while Jarvin [sic] sank again. This time he did not come up. His body was recovered. ~ Massillon Independent, July 8, 1916.
