William was the son of Squire and Ellen Laughlin Hickam. He married Kate Salyer on February 10, 1922 in Scott County, Virginia. They were the parents of a daughter, Edna Salyer. The couple's marriage ended in divorce.

Ackie Mabel Baker and William were the parents of Viola June Baker. Ackie was the daughter of George C. & Maggie McNutt Baker. She married Scott Wise and Viola was raised by her mother and stepfather, taking the Wise surname.

William married Eula Irene Barger, the daughter of George & Sarah Faulkner Barger, on December 6, 1925 in Denver, Colorado. They were the parents of Myra Louise, Herbert Gale and Kenneth Alan Hickam.

Mr. Hickam was killed while working, with a switch crew, for the Southern Pacific Railroad near the Oakland powerhouse, about 200 feet from Glasscock Street. After the brakeman had set the brake and exited the car, he found William's body alongside the railroad tracks. Mr. Hickam had been killed, instantly.

A full account of the accident and the obituary were published on the front page of the November 6, 1944 edition of The Hayward Daily Review newspaper.

Besides the widow and their children, the obituary listed the other survivors as: Father: Squire Hickam; Brother of: J.H. Pullen*, Va., Moscoe and Perry Hickam of Indiana and George Hickam of Ohio.

*This survivor's name should have been listed as: Mrs. J.H. Pullen (Syrilda Hickam Pullen).
