Born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Nov. 29, 1937, he was the son of the late Howard and Mary (Salgar) Abele.
Richard served in the U.S. Navy and was a 36 year veteran of the Norwich Police Department, serving 17 years as Chief of Police, retiring on June 20, 1997.
On Dec. 21, 1958, in Yonkers, N.Y., he was united in marriage to Claire (Bonerbo) Abele.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Labenski Funeral Home, 107 Boswell Ave., Norwich, where the funeral will assemble at 8 a.m. on Wednesday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Patrick Cathedral. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
