Sam was the youngest child and son of Morris Mirkin and Guta Ufberg of Russia. He came to the USA as a child with his family during the Russian Revolution in 1908 and entered through Pennsylvania. He married Wilma Fay McKim on May 21, 1932 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA. She was the daughter of Alfred Hiram McKim and Cora Ellen (Fullerton). No children were born to this union. Sam and Wilma more than made up for this fact by caring for Wilma's nieces and great nephew as if they were their own children and seeing to it that they never went without.

Sam was a man small in stature with a big presence. You did not want to mess with Sam! He had a thick Russian accent and spoke and read fluent Russian. He used to have newspapers delivered special to him in Russian. Sam was a Bootlegger, Tavern and Pool Hall Owner, Farmer in IA and MN., and in his later years he was an apartment manager in CA. His brother Isadore Mirkin's family founded the Budget Rent A Car company.

A debt of gratitude is owed to Sam for always being so kind and generous to the McKim family.

Sam is buried with his wife Wilma.
