Joseph Steppick (Stoeppig), of German descent, was born in Oberseebach, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France on November 8, 1838 to parents, Joannes Martin Stoeppig and Margaretha Schneider Stoeppig. Joseph was the youngest of ten children and came to the United States as a young boy. His family settled in Columbia, Illinois and Joseph later went west and settled in Texas and Oklahoma (Indian Territory).

Joseph Steppick married Nancy Ann Ivey in 1885 and together they had six children:

Charles Franklin Steppick (1887-1923)
Thomas Joseph Steppick (1889-1961)
George Washington Steppick (1890-1973)
William Oscar Steppick (1892-1975)
Bessie Lee Steppick (1895-1973)
James Clarence Steppick (1897-1967)
