Fern Irene Curtiss
Fern Irene Curtiss, 81, Ottawa, died Saturday morning, Nov. 21, 1998.
The daughter of Jess and Susie Lutz Ashburn, she was born Dec. 14, 1916, at Garnett.
She was reared in Garnett where she graduated from high school in 1935.
On Nov. 18, 1935, she and Charles Marshall Curtiss were married in Kansas City, Mo. They made their home in Garnett until moving to Burlington in 1950.
Through the years fern worked at several business in Burlington, including the M & L Grocery, Wood-Perkins Department Store, Wilson's Clothing Store, and Holloway Jewelry. She also was employed as a cook for the Burlington schools for several years.
For 21 years, from 1960 until 1981, she accompanied Charlie as the Curtiss Custom Harvest crew followed the wheat harvest from Texas to Canada. She was in charge of preparing the meals for the harvest crew and they were very fortunate that she was an excellent cook.
She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club for many years.
After several years of failing health she became a resident of the Ottawa Retirement Village earlier this month and it was there her death came.
She leaves her husband, Charles; Carol Sue Knapp and husband Ted, Mission Hill; sons, Larry Curtiss and wife Jerilyn and Steve Curtiss and his wife Kathy, Burlington; eight grandchildren, Tim, Tamra and Traci Knapp, Karen Ristau, Kristen Bastin, Joshua, Matthew and Jacob Curtiss; one great-granddaughter, Devin Marie Ristau; and other relatives. She also leaves her friends and neighbors in this area and the many friends she made while traveling with the harvest crew.
Services were held 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23 at Jones Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation and sent in care of the funeral home. (D.A.E.)
