Mrs. Emma Gene Atkinson Kramer, who was McComb's first lady for more years than any other in the city's history, died unexpectedly Sunday night in a local hospital.

Mrs. Kramer, the widow of the late Mayor X. A. Kramer, succumbed to a heart attack at 10:30 p.m. in City Hospital.

She had been in the hospital for a week and had undergone surgery Thursday, from which she had apparently been recovering satisfactorily.

She was a daughter of the late Wallace and Rosa Payne Atkinson of Summit. Born in Texas she moved back to Summit with her parents at a very early age, and for the remainder of her life she lived there, or in Magnolia or McComb.

She was educated in the Summit public schools and at St. Mary of the Pines at Chatawa.

She was married in 1915 and after two years in his native Magnolia, she and the late mayor moved to McComb.

He died in 1943 following about 15 years' service to McComb as its mayor and as a most outstanding business and civic leader of the community.

Mrs. Kramer was a member of J. J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was of a retiring nature and took little part in social affairs. But she loved chldren and other young people, her church and sports and spent an active life in their behalf.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. today at the family home in Edgewood. Dr. F. Gault Robertson, her pastor, conducted last rites.

Bobby Wood, Prescott Sherman, Conway Welch, Louis Alford, Ed King, L. D. Stringer, Dickey Kendall and Lockie Ellis were her pallbearers.

Mrs. Kramer leaves two daughters, Mrs. Tom D. Magruder and Mrs. Frank Stickney, and a son, X. A. Kramer Jr., all of McComb. She leaves four grandchildren and one brother, Nelson Atkinson, Summit.

She had lost two brothers within the past 18 months. One, Ted, died suddenly early last year, and another, Wallace, met a tragic death in a traffic accident last summer.

Burial was in Hollywood Cemetery with Catchings Funeral Home in charge of services.
