Cody A. Chrisman, age 1, of Toledo, passed away on October 29, 2010 at Mercy St Vincent Medical Center, Toledo from an accidental drowning. He loved music, especially the Mickey Mouse Playhouse "Hot Dog" song, dancing, eating McDonald's chicken nuggets, feeding the fish and the dogs, the outdoors, sweeping the floor with a broom and helping work on his Daddy's bike. Everyone he came in contact with instantly loved him. He is survived by his parents, Jamie Kunkel and Adam Chrisman; grandparents, Glenn (Tammy) Pitzen, Harley (Susan) Chrisman, Amy (Wes Marion) Kunkel; great-grandparents, Craig (Linda) Gilsdorf, Glenn Pitzen, Sr., Robert (Karen) Scanlon, Gloria (Stan) Sgro, Daniel(Geri) Tucker, John (Linda) Booth, Ethel Kunkel, Bill (Shirley) Marion; great-great-grandparents, Yvonne Voltz, Larry (Garnet) Voltz; uncles, Christopher, Nathan Chrisman; aunts, Jenna Chrisman, Jessica Plontz; cousins, Skylar, Eric Jr., Madisyn and Dustin; as well as many other aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A 14-month-old boy who was pulled from the pond in the backyard of his family home in Washington Township Friday was pronounced dead at Mercy St. Vincent Medical about 90 minutes later, authorities said.
Cody Chrisman wandered unnoticed out the rear entrance of his house at 6164 Capshore Dr. and ended up in the pond, according to Lucas County coroner's investigator Steve Kahle.
The decorative pond is two feet wide, four feet long, and about two feet deep. It is surrounded by a deck and high privacy fence. The toddler's mother, who was not identified, retrieved him from the water shortly before 4:30 p.m. The mother had apparently been sleeping.
Officials did not know how long the boy was in the water, but he was unsupervised for up to an hour, Mr. Kahle said
Township firefighters responded in a few minutes and found the boy lifeless. Lucas County EMS personnel rushed him to the hospital, knowing apparent drowning victims can sometimes be revived after being submerged in very cold water for long periods of time.
Mr. Kahle estimated the water temperature to be in the 40s. He said his preliminary investigation indicates the cause of death was accidental drowning.
Dr. Maneesha Pandey, deputy county coroner, will perform an autopsy today.
Township police Chief Chris Kaiser said he assigned a detective to the case whose report will be turned over to the Lucas County Prosecutor's Office, which will decide on any further action.
Capshore is just west of the Ottawa River and south of the Michigan line. Neighbors said the street is home to some volunteer firefighters, a fact that may have assisted in the very fast response.
