John Sawyer graduated at Dartmouth College in 1785. he was ordained and settled at Orford,Grafton, New Hampshire Oct. 2, 1787.
He was installed at Boothbay, Maine October 1798. The first missionary employed by the Mass. Missionary Society in Maine. The originator of the movements which resulted in the Bangor Theological Seminary. The founder of many of the congregational churches in Maine.
The patron of education, sabbath schools and revivals. He was unremitting and self sacrificing in his efforts to do good.
Through all his extended pilgrimage which terminated Oct. 14,1858 at Bangor. he died at age 103 yrs. and 5 dys.
